Hau is a good character who goes from "haha I won't even try, I just wanna to have fun" (something Gladion calls him out directly, and to his face) to sincerely giving it his all even if he's scared he won't be good enough.

He's also not a complete pushover.

He's a pretty good rival.

Hau was the only friend/rival i've liked since Silver up until the part where he got juked by Team Skull and the Yungoos got stolen.

He has good moments after, but losing to fucking Team Skull is fucking pathetic.

Hau says like 3 times he's scared he's not good enough to beat Hala, and Gladion tells him his "not trying" is to cover for the fact that he's just scared of the pain of losing, which he eventually gets over.

Maybe not the best, but better than a lot of rivals, that's for sure.

From all the friendly rivals Hapu is actually the best one and funniest.

Hau literally never says this. Yeah his main goal is to have fun and shit but he does try to win. His whole thing is that at first he doesn't mind when he loses, but once Gladion kicks his ass it starts to bother him culminating at the Aether invasion where he knows he can't afford to be having fun, then finally at the Pokemon League where he finally makes it to the end while being fully serious and beats Hala only to lose to you
