It was either Hapu's grandpa's old trial, or Komo'o have always lived there and are naturally competitive enough to essentially be a natural trial without human interference aside from the crystal.

The trial was considered the 'first trial of Alola' so most likely the original trial captain is long dead and the original Kommo-o totem kept the tradition going, because they're naturally disciplined Pokemon with a tendency to train for shit
