If you like SoL, baby-ish and/or comfy things over overarching story arcs, epic quests and or shonen drama, the fine by me, but remember Pokemon's main and almost exclusive audience target are 0-6 yeats old toddlers and young kids.

Pokemon is actually on the same ground as other puerile everlasting japanese anime like the actual Doraemon (yes, the 2005 remake is more childish and gag-abusive than the 1979 series), Anpanman, Shimajirou, Ojarumaru and Ninja Boy Rantaro. It's even pretty similar to some western edutainment shows like Bob the constructor, Dora the Explorer, Teletubbies, Curious George, Peppa Pig and Barney the Dinosaur regarding target audience.

Frankly, I prefer Pokemon to do the former because they've proven they are not willing to commit to the latter over and over, yet somehow so many people want them to try for some unfathomable reason.

That aside, Pokemon is shit at the serious stuff if we were going to seriously examine it. What was so "epic" about Ash's 6th fucking gym quest? Yeah okay the battles were great, but how is that inherent to the style? SM could have great battles just as easily and it wouldn't run against the tone. There was nothing remarkable about the XY quest itself. The Flare stuff could count, but it was a total of like 20 episodes if you added all that shit up, and the stuff it contained writing-wise could be written up by a fresh creative writing graduate. All the heavy lifting was done by korean slaves drawing in-betweens.

If the animation becomes shit in SM it's because the team is phoning it in or they lost a sponsor or some shit, it should really have nothing to do with the tone itself.

They didn't lose any sponsor. SME, Lotte, Daiichipan, Nintendo, Takara Tomy, Shogakukan and TPC are still the main stable sponsors. Art will look like shit in some instances, but I think animation is actually fine. The main problem is with the inbetweeners because of the digital workflow.
