However the "canon" starter really isn't a thing that exists because if you wanna go by "most fitting" then everything falls apart for certain gens if you pick the "most fitting" starter for either male or female.

If you wanna take into account the male protag only then sure this works for rby, gsc, rse and dppt, but it falls apart in bw, bw2, xy and sm. If you consider mudkip being the intended starter for brendan like it originally was then it falls apart there too.

Game freak also retconned a ton of other shit like wallys gardevoir, wattson having a manectric as his ace, gen 4 fire elite four team, volkners ace pokemon being electivire, etc. So shit like this is very inconsecquential. I mean if you wanna look at it this way, red is the only protagonist that has made comebacks in recent games and he has all the starters from his gen. They'd probably do the same shit with Ethan too.
