Here are my suggestions:

Some totem battles already used abilities, though. Lurantis could call a Castform which would use sunny day, activating Lurantis' leaf guard and letting it fire off that physical solar beam, while Castform itself fucked your ass raw with Weatherball.

This alone would make the games much more fun for me, especially if you had to choose blind without knowing the opponents roster. I generally do it as a self imposed rule as it is, but it'd be nice to see it codified. Though it'd require seeing more trainers with at least 2-3 pokemon to battle.
