It's not for a couple of reasons.

#1 being that NSMB, NSMB Wii, and MK Wii together have sold close to 100 million copies. Pokémon franchise as of this past April had only just reached 200 million.

#2 big reason is that Pokémon spinoffs don't sell a fraction of the copies Mario spinoffs do. Even ignoring Mario Kart games, poké-spinoffs rarely went above 500k even on the DS. Far, far less these days.

Mario has better quality games even if it has more mediocre ones. GameFreak just keeps spewing the same shit out without drastically improving it the way Mario64 or Galaxy revolutionized their genres. Hell, even spinoffs like Mario Party or Paper Mario were more revitalizing. GameFreak's just been lazy as fuck since gen IV for some reason.

This year has been a modern Pokemania, Gamefreak should really keep the momentum going

A huge chunk of the 80 million added on in the past 7/8 months is the initial boom of Go downloads. Actual paid for software is 200 million + whatever Moon/Sun are up to. Regardless, the Pokemon franchise is still well below the Mario one in total sales.

What people seem to forget is that Mario games are usually being sold on mainline consoles that already have WAY more people who own them vs the number of people who owned handhelds. If the main pokemon games had been sold on the wii and nintendo 64 then it would be a lot closer. You cant compare apples to oranges.
