The thing was obviously favoured by GF and the kids loveed it. I don't see the problem other than it being completly overpowered for 1 gen then getting one of the most brainded megas ever but he desereved that mega since he got power creeped to hell.

As much as I loathe Charizard, I can't deny that it got popular because of it's own merits before it was pushed like there was no tomorrow. Lucario on the other hand was heavily marketed to be everyone's new favorite from it's very conception.

People hate it because there are other Pokemon who deserve to have even a fraction of Lucario's popularity but don't get shit when it comes to appearances or merch because all GF cares about are the ~10 Pokemon they want you to care about. Don't like Lucario? Too bad, here's an entire mini storyline in X/Y centered around it, taking place in a fuckhuge Mega Lucario statue, and when you're finally done with it, you get a Lucario of your very own.
