How do you, and I mean YOU, typically go about building a team?
Do you build it for a certain tier? Do you just target a certain aesthetic or theme? Do you just want to use your favorite Mons?
Pick whatever looks cool, try to get good type coverage. If a Pokemon I have starts really straggling, drop it.
As time goes on, time honored favorites will cement their place, and anyone not pulling their weight gets benched.

Ow the edge

How is that edgy? If he was edgy, he'd be like "ONLY THE BEST POKEMON ARE WORTHY OF BEING ON MY TEAM, I DON'T USE USELESS TRASH WORTHLESS PIXELS", etc.

When playing showdown/smogon rules, I usually start with one Pokemon I really want to use, then go to that tier. I give it a buddy, a counter removal, then let the other three slots make them team good.
When going VGC, I'll admit, 4-5 members of my team are usually copypasta.

Oh god, he said "benched" I read that wrong. My bad. Sorry, anon.
favourites>aesthetic>tier
It's hard not to be attached to some Pokemon after I've been playing the games for so long. It's not to say I don't respect competitive players, but I don't think it's a play style I would find very appealing.
>>30735618
>Pokemon is not working on a team
>Welp, better keep using it, lol.
>>30735306
I just use my favorite mons, and occasionally go for themes.
All of them include my signature Honchkrow, though.
>>30735306
Pick a mon or two I like, add a mon or two that supports them directly, add a mon or two that covers remaining spots in the team as well as hazard management/cleric work.
1. Always have some form of hazard management, even if it's just setting your own without being able to remove if cast on your side
2. Always have a cleric or status absorber or else you'll get held back by the most basic of status abusers
3. Always have a means of breaking stall

I mostly play monotypes, makes for a good challenge and makes me feel like a specialist instead of a special snowflake. Got a cool Ghost type monorun on Moon with Mimikyu, Gengar, Mismagius, Decidueye, Drifblim, and Dhelmise
For competitive though I do like everyone else and make a core, then build from there.
>>30735306
Mostly just my favorites. I somewhat plan around a tier but never let it keep me from using a pokemon I really wanna use. Honestly I never take aesthetics into consideration beyond balltism.

I'm a similar case since I always aim to build a team around my three favourite mons: Mega Charizard Y, Scizor and Bisharp. Of course they have horrible synergy together, but whether it's Singles or Doubles I always try to work around it but at the same time I refuse to use certain Pokemon despite how competitively viable they are.
You won't see me running Latios or the Kami trio from BW any time soon because I don't like them really (no hate on Latios, but I just like Latias more, plus it fits the Red "theme" more).
So yeah, in the end the result are "usable" teams around those three mons with three mons that back them up decently while being badass as fuck. Mons like Garchomp, Venusaur, Aegislash, Latias, Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini and Tyranitar come to mind.

Meanwhile he used some pretty shitty Pokemon.
Magneton, Crobat, and Sneasel? I like them all but if he wanted the should've given him some higher quality mons.
Shit, Sneasel didn't even have an evolution in GSC.

Usually I try to build a team around a certain pokemon I want to use. Currently I'm trying to make a hail team for vgc and I'm trying to see what pokemon work well with it. If a Pokemon doesn't pull its weight I swap it out with a different one, repeat until I get bored or I feel that the team works well enough.
Usually I just pick Pokemon by aesthetics (unless they're very shitty), but I'm struggling really hard to make a team this gen.
I currently have Alola Ninetales, Salazzle and Mimikyu and I already don't know who else to get. I don't like anyone else this gen.
I don't use legendaries or pseudo-legendaries. I don't want to use gen 1 pokes unless they're Alola forms because I've used them multiple times in multiple gens before and it's getting boring.
I'd love to use Decidueye but he's a fucking cripple as far as speed is concerned. I'd like to get a fire mon but I don't like any of the ones available in SM.
Waiting for pokebank is suffering.
>>30739103
*I'd like to get a water mon
Not fire. Already have Salazzle for that.
>>30735306
I usually just go for whatever I like that gets into my party first, unless there's a straight upgrade found. I also like thematic teams and mono-type teams.
I don't play competitive personally, but the people I play with force me to adopt competitive strategies while still working within those mons that I enjoy using.

gimmicks desu
Right now working on this:

I know I was lucky on the drought, but I actually read that trick room and didn't set up my own.

They were good at the time.

I'm a Monotype Karenfag. Went with Ghost last gen, working on my Fairy team now.
>Mienshao
>Milotic
>Bronzong
>Escavalier
>Flygon
>Chandelure
Ultimate karenfag. Only one i don't really like is Bronzong.
>>30739989
>Mienshao
Man I remember when that thing was on every team. Incredible how quickly it fell out of favor.
>>30735306
I like mostly non-evo mons but stage 1 are ok, too. I tend to choose on appearance when building a team.
I just finished breeding and training a team to use in the upcoming alolan competition.
Mimikyu, Togedemaru, Lapras, Arcanine, Ribombee with the addition of Solgaleo.
Might be unbalanced but meh, i got nothing better to do.
