It still has your generic boy hero who goes up, your demure mary sue waifu, your super badass overpowered villain that runs on asspulls to defeat, your non-sensible writing etc.

A character doesn't have to be the strongest fighter in a series to be a mary sue. She was pretty much a textbook damsel mary sue, just one in a series that openly goes against normal writing conventions.

KLK's popularity died down as soon as the series ended. TTGL is still popular because chicks dig giant robots.
