I was a good 5-8 levels below the Elite Four but I found it to be one of the tougher Leagues of the series personally. In XY and most gens I just swept each E4 member's team with one Pokemon while I came down to my last Pokemon on two of the Alola E4. I play with set battles for reference rather than switch. A lot of my Pokemon were getting OHKO'd even without super effective damage due to the level difference and I tried to fight every trainer and didn't run from wild battles.

Kukui actually took me a few attempts to beat, him setting up Stealth Rock on turn 1, then setting up tailwind with Braviary and then spamming whirlwind really crippled my team pretty badly and is a strategy I haven't seen other NPCs trainers exploit. It felt more like a showdown battle thanks to the fucking sneaky pebbles forced switch strategy.
