It's a counter for psychic like you said. Psychic types were unstoppable in RBY and for balance reasons they made a type that had an immunity to Psychic and was also weak to the type that Psychic was strong against, Fighting.

They didn't come up with something different because that's just what they decided on. That's an unanswerable question, really, unless they interviewed Masuda or whoever about it.

Ghist type is there to, well play around the concept of shadows and ghastly traits.

No seriously, ghost is pretty much the shadow manipulation type and dark is about kicking someone's groin till they drop with only night daze(pretty much a fog move by activation rate tied with smog and Seed Flare) and Dark Void are the only non z move dark type ones that control darkness to some extent.

You can't just claim there's a pattern then say all the exceptions to the pattern don't count in order to confirm the pattern. It's like saying all numbers between 2 and 10 are even, if you ignore 3, 5, 7, and 9, but there's clearly a pattern of even numbers there!

I'm not making a pattern, all dark type moves have been poorly localized. Replace dark with evil in Japanese and they actually start making sense.

Stop trying to see them in you western context and then see them on the original Japanese context for the inception of the evil type.

Evil thoughts bending space and used as a focused wave, cheating people out of light so they fall asleep like parakeets, kicking someone throat so they don't scream, ganging up on someone and beating it up and finally freaking cutting it up like a samurai testing his blade on a peasant with a cool wind weasel animation.

What was the point in having types at all? What if moves actually had more secondary effects that could be countered with a wider variety of moves?

Dark (Evil/Mean) and Ghost should have just been "Dark" after gen 2. Water and Ice could have just been "Water," but Ice is different enough that it is warranted, still doesn't explain some of its weaknesses though. Ground and Rock should have been "Earth" really makes no sense to split these two up, especially since almost every Ground-type Pokemon in gen 1 was also Rock-type. The only exception was Diglett and Dugtrio who have rocks in their designs and even back in gen 1 could learn half of the Rock-type moves at the time.
