Uh? He's really the same as Rufus Shinra from VII. I honestly don't think he has a terrible or edgy personality at all, he was pissed off at the time and had a reason to be. He clearly showed how he really is in the late story, actually has humor, is caring, likes to be strong etc. That last part is especially good for being the head of a corporation, rather than some spineless nitwit like lillie. I mean don't get me wrong, I love lillie but seriously she only just barely got her wits at the very end of the game, where gladion has been out there doing shit for 2 years. I get that he is older than her, but still, that would just mean he not only as a male, but also as the older sibling would have the Aether Foundation passed on to him.
