With the Dragon typing on his Mega he's got an easier time switching into sun mons than most, so if nothing else Growth provides nice counter tech to the enemy's sun. But if you wanted to run him with, say, Torkoal, you'd prefer Solarbeam over Leaf Storm simply because you can spam Solarbeam without losing your Growth boosts.

Though you are absolutely right that Sun is shit and Grass types in Sun are double shit.
