how is this fuck? (both ingame and competitively)
never see him being talked about much but his signature move does a shit ton of damage even though its probably predictable af and has a good typing

In doubles, you can trigger your own trap by using Earthquake or Petal Blizzard.
Shell Trap would've been great if it were like other protection counter moves in that it completely protects you from damage. I used it in my ingame team but it kind of felt boring to use despite my initial prerelease hype over it.
I love his design, but he has 60 HP and shitty movepool and no recovery. What a shame

You can also force the opponent to attack it with Spotlight.

Wait Earthquake can trigger it?
>>30677358
Yep. Any Physical move triggers it, regardless of contact.

Charge Beam is your friend

Seems like it would have more purpose in doubles, since its teammate can trigger the trap and help keep it alive.

>physical protection move that causes a 150bp attack counterattack regardless of whether or not the attack makes contact
Turtonator @ Quick Claw
Sassy Nature
252 Spd Def
252 Sp Atk
the rest in Def
Flamethrower
Dragon Pulse
Shell Trap
Shell Smash
It does amazing in Battle Royals (earthquake nerf pretty much guarantees it'll live for a while)
Shell Trap keeps physical foes at bay. Once the foes realize they should ignore you because of your Trap, you set up a Shell Smash
Sometimes you'll even get lucky and land a Shell smashed Flamethrower with your Quick Claw at an unsuspecting opponent.
I have a lot of fun with it.

It was my late-game MVP in game. It even ate 2 Play Rough from Totem Mimikyu while I healed up my owl for the killing blow.
I've been theorcrafting it and Drampa both, because I aggressively WANT to use them despite not being Garchomp level stronk.
It's a dragon that takes neutral damage from Fairy and Ice and a Fire type that takes neutral damage from Water, which is a pretty big deal too. Good in doubles and someone to watch in mono-type for sure. He's not an outight fairy killer, but a low-key fairy deterer that can bait a swap. Shelltrap + Firium Z is a pretty hefty nuke if you go Modest and dump everything into SpAtk, it's gonna blast through almost anything that doesn't resist fire or have some crazy high SpDef. The problem is there's just more appealing Z-Move users out there. It makes Kefki weep, but anything else in higher tiers will probably punch through it's meh HP since it's weak to EQ and Stone Edge.
So, not ever gonna be an OU tier sweeper, in my opinion. But it's got a fun gimmick, and it could easily blind-side someone not expecting that nuclear Inferno Overdrive. Probably NU just because no one will put the effort into using it right.

indeed, you still have to take damage and live though.
It'll see some use in doubles once it gets wide guard on gimmick teams, and its typing is pretty helpful since it's really only alolan marowak that can put dents in it with the ride spread. Devastating drake can be used to do about 97% of A-marowak's health with a defensive set.
