When I was a kid, all my friends had gameboys and pokemon games, but my mom couldn't afford those things for me. I remember being so jealous and thinking they must all have better lives than me because they have these things I don't.

Now as an adult I can afford these things and having them makes me feel like my life is better for it.

It's kinda like comfort food. When you got ice cream (or whatever it was for you) as a kid, it was a special occasion. Getting ice cream meant you did something worth being rewarded. And getting ice cream now brings back those feelings of joy and pride you may not be getting from other parts of your life.

The music, fanart, and release hype/community are probably the biggest factors.

I like sharing my experiences as I progress through the main game, finding secrets and easter eggs in post game, having eargasms when tracks like poni canyon play, enjoy going through the massive amount of comfy fanart the series gets.

In those aspects, the games and enjoyment I get are 10/10. But overall I think the series is pretty mediocre. It could improve massively in so many other aspects yet it never does. It's like GF live in their own little bubble and rarely try to take inspiration from other games and how they handle these aspects.

Just my two cents.

Because it still has it's fun moments.

Because I don't have anything in my life to live for, so I just fill the gap with nostalgia.

Honestly its just become one of those games I play to unwind, its a chilled series and has a lot of options with gameplay, what with the pokemon and playstyles you can go by, e.g. monotype, nuzlocke, egglocke if you got the resources, etc.

People tend to say Pokemons a casual series and it is, but while it would be nice that they could improve its difficulty more, i'm not angry over it at the end of the day.
Pokemon doesn't come to mind when I think "difficult", there's many other games to fill that role and if you really want to play the series for difficulty, you can just find one of many pokemon fangames to at least try and scratch that itch or just try the self imposed challenges.

Also helps that the series is so big that art porn is pumped out on the regular, there's character or pokemon if that's your thing, for everyone.

I haven't played competitive since gen 5, got too burnt out, I've only been putting in around 150 hours into each new game since 2013. Meanwhile Heartgold had 750+ hours.

Same reason I still play Dragon Quest games, Replay the Eathbound Trilogy, Play a lot of Fallout and PRE 7 Final Fantasy.
I like RPGs. I find raising stats to be soothing. Point allocation, strategy, number crunching, all with decent to amazing stories. Just finished DQM 3D, and will be moving on to Chrono Trigger DS (first time playing, missed it as a kid) very shortly.

RPGs are why I hacked my New 3DS XL, not so I could get good IVs or Nebby in a Moon Ball.

I thought I was done with Pokemon after X/Y

I've felt like I've done everything the entire series could offer and that the series has just exhausted itself

I even skipped ORAS (despite never even playing RSE)

But then I gave S/M a chance, because after the shitshow of the story which was X/Y, I thought the series' story and characters could never be as good as Gen 5

I like turn-based RPGs and I've been playing Pokemon games for so long that I can ignore their faults. Everything else out there I've already played to death, requires infecting your computer with Steam, is a boring grindfest or relies far too heavily on the alien cluterfuck that is Japanese culture.

Relatable.

Because i love the concept of Pokemon.
I love the fect that you can capture your favorite creatures, and explore a big virtual world alongside them while they get stronger and stronger to the point that no npc can touch you.
Plus the gameplay and competitive scene are pretty fun, at least for me.
