He's the first protag of the series, so he gets top billing, and he comes from a time when there was no male or female option, so its easy to make him show up as the canon protag of his gen.

Other protags don't get that, so people are mad.

He in universe, and people that kiss his ass think he's one of the strongest trainers, but they the player have beat em him which means the protag they played as has, so they view him as overrated.

Its that simple.

Really its no different from any other game that gets a different cast in each game letting its first protag get to do things in later games.

I don't hate Red but as a character he's boring.
Literally all the game says he's done is take down Team Rocket and become the Kanto champion for only so long before someone took over.
That's it yet everyone views him as the best when that's not true 5 people have canonically beaten Red in the game and ever since beating the first league he has done jack squat. In short he's overrated.

At most 3 people have beaten him if you ignore all arguments about the PWT being canon or not and the fight outside the tree being a test or not. That's 3 losses over roughly 10 years in universe. He only loses to other protagonists by virtue of not being the one controlled by the player during those fights. If GF did another gen 1 remake that spanned into Johto and had a time skip at the end to fight gold, people would throw another shit fit about canon since Red would suddenly beat Gold.

The MC and all of the Legacy characters showing up at the Battle Tree is probably canon. At the very least, Red/Blue are canon, along with their first fight.
