Shards are probably faster to hunt for if you just want to patch up one stat from breeding(or want to avoid raising speed/attack). Treasure is pretty nice for your ingame shit mons since it raises everything and one gold is equal to hundreds of shards. So even if you only get like one gold every 6 or so trips you still get a ton of money from selling the shit you get plus the caps.
