This. The Diancie movie was just so forgettable and bland with too many side characters who had poorly developed personalities.

Hoopa had this kinda sorta "epic" feel it and great animation, but the climax is a clusterfuck of legendaries spamming beams for 15 minutes followed by a poorly explained/rushed series of plot twists.

A legendary battle is fine in theory, but it doesn't write itself. The problem is that there's no rhyme or reason to how the battle in the Hoopa movie went down. Hoopa and its Unbound Form just sort of summon legendaries as if they're pulling them out of a hat. No explanation of why the legendaries they pick decide to cooperate; they just do, and it makes them feel like robots. Add to that all the beam spam and it just doesn't feel all that compelling even though the visuals and sound are very good.

You could kinda tell from Yuyama's comment that he just wanted to tell a heartwarming story about Hoopa and its adoptive family and that he wasn't all that happy about the "oh, and put these 15 legendaries in the movie too" order he was given from the marketing people.

Whoever did that really put him in a bind then. Throwing a bunch of legendaries in wont make the movie good automatically and it makes it tougher on the writer because he has to then either use valuable time developing the legendaries' roles or give that time to other plot/character development.

It's a zero-sum game in some ways. You keep adding characters, but you're not given additional time to develop/write them in properly.

I figured. It's a tough situation to be put in.

I liked Hoopa and its story quite a bit. Wish they had cut the number of legendaries in half and maybe given a couple of them actual personalities, and then the battle could have been more tightly focused and Hoopa would have been allowed to shine more.

Rayquaza and Deoxys are pretty hype Pokemon, I remember loving the idea of Rayquaza being so mad that it follows Deoxys even after it already fucked it up once.

I actually remember Pokeshippers being jealous when this scene in the Manaphy movie happened. Movie 9 literally felt like a movie suited to Misty given it was all about water pokemon and a water legendary who was the prince of the sea. And then May raised a baby legendary and Ash acted protective over them....if it was Misty in May's place they would have called it a Pokeshipping movie.

In retrospect its pretty telling Misty was kept out of the AG movies in general, she could have technically appeared in the Lucario or Manaphy one since they took place in Kanto.

Misty only appears in the two episodes Ash returns to Pallet after the Hoenn league. Her last episode is the the Clefairy/Cleffa Mt. Moon episode where she and Max bond together over being siblings, then she just returns to her Gym.

That episode aired in 2005 and wound up being her final episode of the entire series. Funny thing is I don't think the writers knew that at the time, so Misty's last episode is a filler she has to share with Max of all characters.

Misty's never appeared since the start of Battle Frontier. Its literally been 11 years since she even appeared in an episode. They didn't even bother to show her in DP even though she was referenced.

The fact that Misty has never met any of Ash's friends after May and Max really puts into perspective how long its been since she's been purposely excluded from the anime.
