You guys need to checkout Electivire.

Pros:
Shits on electric attacks and gets and actually useful +1 spe boost.
If the oppenent has Marowak you can still bring Gyarados to 10% HP with an uninvested Discharge.
EQ will also destroy Marowak and Nihilego (which can tank at full-80% HP).
It can run the ground z-move and KO/cripple anything unresisted.


Cons:
For now it's walled by Garchomp.
Post bank you can give it ice-punch but then you have to decice between that, protect or dicharge.
95 base speed can be awkard.
Wild charge, the main attacking move, gives recoil.
Tapu Lele can take a hit and KO you back if modest.
Tapu Bulu plain doesn't give a shit.
Low bulk.

I've done some research, I'm just building my first team on Showdown right now to start getting a hands-on feel of the meta right now.

Arcanine is my ace, does bulky rocky helmet intimidate still work wonders? I see this new Burn Up business, but it doesn't seem worth it.

Also, what works well with Arcanine? I was thinking maybe Eviolite Magneton, but maybe that's just me being a hipster.

I mostly use it because I want something that punches Gyarados and Nihilego at the same time, but it can also cripple Marowak, Celesteela and abuse the hell out of the opponent's Tapu Koko which is good.

Spread is Hasty 244atk 20spA (brings Gyarados to hail KO with Discharge and doesn't really affect attack output) 252 spe, there's probably better spreads.

I'm new to synergy so bear with me. I am not using the standard Steela, and a slightly different Gyarados with eq for surprises. I figured between Lele/Nihl/Wak Psychic/Ghost is pretty well threatened which is why I'm running it over Crunch. With 3/5 mons able to escape damage from that. Lele is a surprise heavy hitter that offers priority nerf. Gastro is to threaten bulk water when using Wak as well as checking Chomp with beam heavy Def and recover/protect packing lefties. What can I do to improve, and is this a viable setup to keep meta users guessing?

Due to how your team is maybe you want to try Trick Room on Mimikyu. On preview everyone will pretty much think you're running a fast team and will try to outspeed you, so you surprise them with a slow Gyarados.
But this is all on paper, the true way to build a team is to test it over and over.

As someone who has also tested Poliwrath, you definitively need Fake Out support one way or another. It's the same as if it were Azumarril who almost always had a redirector or Fake Out at it's side to Belly Drum in peace and quiet. Also, Sitrus Drum is still better than Z-Drum. Improves the general chances of survival and lets him stay for longer specially during the times you aren't able to or don't feel the need to Drum.

Hypnosis feels an even bigger high risk reward thing to me desu. Gotta see your videos to see how you do with it but it's still pretty much a coinflip. I'd rather run something safer like Ice Punch, Encore or even Poison Jab.
