I never thought of it before, but other than the usual autism it's really a critical part of paving the way forward and making the 3D era live up to its potential. I want the overworld to come to life, instead of just being a big colorful void of empty nothingness that feels like it just exists to put some distance between you and the next battle/objective/whatever. NPCs are dull robots, areas and routes are monotonous even in SM, there's really nothing to see, not even some Pokémon in the fucking Pokémon game.

At the very least, optional followers can break up this monotony and give you a little more immersion. It's an game centered around Pokémon, after all, so why would you just keep them crammed into their balls at all times until you need to battle with them?

But for me, I personally enjoyed it. There wasn't much to it, gameplay wise, but it was a nice aesthetic thing and seeing the sprites of each pokemon behind you, with different sizes depending on the mon, was neat. It also basically felt like an rpg where you have multiple party members behind you. I think that's much more interesting than just one character walking by themselves.

Can someone tell me why a vocal minority of autists hate the idea following Pokemon so much?

They never got in the way of the player.
Their existence was never "pushed" on the player.
They never had any negative effects on battling.
They had some utility for keeping track of friendship evolutions.
They take nothing away from existing gameplay.

They were just a nice aesthetic enhancement that contributed to the experience of the game and made it more fun for some players. They didn't necessarily have utility, and they didn't have to, because a game by virtue of being a game is for entertainment, whether through gameplay, storytelling, visuals, or all three.

Is it just a bunch of smogontards who are afraid this feature would further drive the point home that GF doesn't care about pandering to them and probably never will?

Or furfags in denial who try to act like they just play this game for the battles and not the whole package?

Or just contrarians who feel it's overhyped, which yeah, I'd agree with that, but that doesn't mean it wasn't cool or meaningful to a decent enough amount of people to make you feel that way.

I like it for the novelty. I think the idea of having your Pokémon partner interact with you on your journey is cute.

While this doesn't have a use, it certainly feels like I'm immersed in the game more.

Plus, the five golden leaves were a nice touch too.
