I really liked how hands-on Ilima was with you all throughout the first Island. I wonder why they didn't do that for all of them though. Acerola was also given a lot of focus, but that was mainly her interacting with Lillie and not you.

What makes the Trial Captains and Kahunas so interesting?
I can't remember any gym-leaders from previous regions like Kalos or Hoenn that get so much positivity.

Well, in term of the gyms you usually only meet them once and fight them and that's it other npcs will throw a few Infos or something but they're not really..great to say the least (fighting type gym leaders "he really like fighting!!)

But the trial captains and kahunas have more to do then their own small roles going to their houses talking to them, and then you slowly find out more about thier lives and families
I actually thought I'd be hating the electric type captain but he ended up being not that bad, him and molayne are great and genuinely care about each other.

Basically they're written as actual character and not just checkpoints you need to beat to move on to the next. Almost all of their direct fights being optional quests helped with this.
