There's no real bad Pokemon mainline game, there are just some that are better than others

XY is great gameplay-wise allowingallowing for different playthroughs. However, if you care about story you should run from it as it has the worst out of all the gens.

It has the best breeding mechanics

XY and SM are the first games since Gen II where all the Pokémon designs appeal to me, they didn't introduce many new Pokémon but they were all of a high design standard.
As for gameplay, both games are atmospheric and good for a casual playthrough (just remember to turn off the fucking Exp. Share)
That said, XY are forgettable; SM are leaps and bounds ahead of them
