And I was about to get there. The Shuriken happened; it simply came to be, never explained, the only perosn who even acknowledged its existence was Alan with a brief "o shid I might be fucked" face and nothing from anyone else. Then it never got explained or reused ever again, not even mentioned by anyone.

And there's more. There were two versions of the Orange Shuriken, one from Greninja AMV released just before the League with black stuff surrounding it and another from preview and actual episode with wind effects. Now you ask yourself why in the world would you spend money and time into a promotional AMV where one of the scenes were yet to be even released, only then to get that same scene and use it in the actual anime BUT with different effects, meaning more time and money wasted... unless you had a reason to edit those. You can say it may have looked weird with black dots, but the work to redo those and only those? Unless there were more scenes to be edited so you would actually have a reason to bother. Pretty much this. Even when a show has declined, that doesn't mean the decline is totally meaningful or fatal. Pokemon has nominally declined over time, but it's still a healthy and popular show by any objective standard. It's not hard to understand, or at least it SHOULDN'T be. Ratings are an overrated metric nowadays, especially for a show like Pokemon where the end goal is merely to market merchandise and games.
