Gyms, in DLC or sequel/third version. But not actually DLC, because Gamefreak.

Kukui has a league under construction. Someone on the staff probably pointed out that there should also be under construction gyms by extension, so they added an empty plot to every town. It's a neat detail.

Well, there are 4 empty lots, one per island, in the largest population center of each island: Hau'oli, Heahea, Malie, and Seafolk Village.

Two possibilities: it's nothing, or it's filler for Stars.

Assuming the latter is true then there are myriad possible buildings that could go there. The most popular theory being gyms; but that doesn't quite fit unless the Alolan gym challenge is gimped by half, not to mention the trials and kahunas pick up the slack for pre-league fighting.

I think it's likelier, and /vp/ is going to want to kill me for this, contest halls.
