How do I build and properly use a good defensive team?

Immunity to Fire or Water or Fighting.
Immunity to Dragon.
Immunity to Ground.
This is the defensive core of the team. You switch to these guys.
Then you plug in whatever help they need.

Heatran, Sylveon, Rotom-Wash is an example of a defensive core.
