I've given up on new AND good Pokemon games. I'm fine with Gens I-V, but I think after SM I'm done. Probably gonna trade-in all my 3DS Pokemon carts and get a refurbished DSlite with the GBA slot so I can fully enjoy the cross-gen compatibility of III-V and I'll enjoy Gens I & II separately with Pokemon Stadium. Some Pokemon anime characters are actually pretty decent and actually get real, genuine emotional development, even if the writing is a bit shoddy/lazy at times, but yeah.

I think Serena was one of the best in terms of actually being written with emotional depth, setting aside the lackluster nature of her goal. Even though sometimes the writing was lazy, she's one of the few Pokemon anime characters who actually feels real to me, if that makes sense, because we constantly got these emotional/introspective scenes with her. That's not to say that all those scenes are well-written, but at least they're there and they offer a window into her soul, so to speak.

The best character arcs or peaks into a character's psyche are the ones to do with Pokemon.

Charizard's arc did take awhile, but I think it's the best example the show has to offer.

Island of the Giant Pokemon where we get to hear Ekans and Koffing talk was neat insight also. They didn't like being evil, but loved their masters so they did what they were told. That's deep, lads.

Last season Ash was finally becoming the young adult he was always meant to be.

Then the bastards robbed him of another league victory, took away the only girl I'd ever want him to be with besides Misty, and then gave him the crappiest new design I've ever seen.

Pokemon sun and moon takes a giant crap all over the brilliant work of last season's animators. I've not been a fan of the anime in years until last season. They've broken my heart all over again and I will never trust the bastards after this garbage style they've forced on us. Ffs even the Japanese fans hate the art style for Ash.

Yeah, but this isn't shipping central. It's an anime general, where we talk about what's going on in the anime. Ash/Serena was a real subplot that had a real impact on the show, even if it doesn't meet some traditional definition of "canon" (which I'd argue is kind of silly to even apply to a series like Pokemon anyway). This Ash/Lillie stuff is just Tumblr headcanon trash between two characters that have barely spoken to each other.

Serebii used to be good 10 years ago. We had a really good pokemon anime community back then while AG and halfway into DP were airing. Fans who genuinely enjoyed watching the anime and said what they didn't like as constructive criticism. When the writers have Serena kiss Ash and say that she'll come back for him at some point in the future and show his eyes glimmering at her, it's not hard for me to understand what the writers are telling me, even if a real relationship never actually unfolds on-screen.

The only people who are going to argue about this crap years from now are hardcore fans/shippers on sites like this. The rest of the fandom, casualfags included, simply won't care; to them Serena is "the girlfriend."
