Women? In PokeSTEM?
>>
Science is generally seen as a man's profession so it is a harder industry for women to progress in
>>
>>30466875

It's more that women choose not to go into science.
>>
>>30466847
Contrary to popular belief, women aren't as smart or competent as men. They are scientifically proved to be better at certain things, but this isn't one of them.
>>
>>30466888
>>30466875

It's very likely that it's a mixture of both.

>>

People have spent a lot of time and money researching the lack of women in STEM and trying to get more women into STEM.

Women don't care about STEM.

Most of those studies don't count a female director of human resources at a Fortune 500 tech company who has a bachelor's in computer science and a master's in applied statistics as being a woman in STEM.

If you've got a male and a female candidate with equal STEM credentials for a position that requires a lot of soft skills, guess which one people will subconsciously assume isn't a closet sperg with poor social skills because of their gender.

the one incentives the other in a loop: fewer women in science means fewer role models means less interest and fewer perceived opportunities which means fewer women in science. I know social sciences can be sort of a tough thing to wrap your head around at 15 but come on, try to keep up.
>>
>>30468567
It's male dominated because women THINK it's male dominated, tell other women this who are subsequently put off. NO-ONE in science gives a shit about your gender. The cycle is perpetuated entirely by themselves

I have a friend who did medical science at uni through her own merit and drive and she STILL turned into a massive SJW upon entering uni even though she's essentially proving that entire assertion wrong by being there in the first place.
>>
>>30468939
>NO-ONE in science gives a shit about your gender
that's not true in the slightest. ironically studies to prove as much have shown heavy bias on part of peer review as well as professors against the factual or logical soundness of work or studies where women are thought to be the project leader. Like most academic fields there is still a reflexive dismissal of women's work on the basis of literally nothing but gender. Case in point being that said studies have had opposed gender doubles pose as presenters to gauge reaction and again there is arbitrary scrutiny lobbed at female scientists regularly that are absent when a man presents a woman's work for review.
>>
>>30469002
Source on those studies?

Say "us" if you can't figure out why the way the data presented in this chart makes it useless, sweetcheeks.

It's a shame there wasn't some recent major event of international concern that involved people collecting data and presenting statistics strongly supporting one outcome before getting blown the fuck out by reality to drive home the point that most people aren't qualified to read statistics, let alone present them. Something like an American Presidential election where the pollsters predicted a landslide for the loser.

My PI told my labmates and me that this is true.
A lot of people in academia are aware that - historically - the field was not woman-friendly. Therefore they're trying to change that by favoring women if qualification is similar between two candidates.
In one or two generations things might be more balanced, and we might hopefully see a shift to less bias overall (and less whining to go with it I hope).

>>30466847

The more freedom or choice that a culture allows for their women, the less likely they are to be in STEM fields. Our baseline assumption must be that the Pokemon regions are very free.
>>
>>30466847
Japanese women are expected to become housewives. Cultural things and shit.
>>
>>30471654
>The more freedom or choice that a culture allows for their women, the less likely they are to be in STEM fields.

Would you argue then that 100 years ago there were more women in STEM fields?
(I'm assuming we agree on the fact that 100 years ago there was less freedom of choice for women.)

Are you sure you worded that correctly? It makes no sense to me.
>>
>>30471654
>>30471688
These conflict, so some clarification: If your culture allows people to choose their own profession, women are significantly less likely to choose STEM. If it is chosen for them by their family, and they are not in some regressive housewife/islam culture, they are much more likely to be in STEM. This is because the family wants a high-paying, prestigious profession to get money from their kids. Therefore, the Pokemon regions probably allow freedom of choice for women.

For clarification, we were not arguing about quotas (externally imposed regulations), but about biases (internal conscious or subconscious preferences).
>>
>>30471850
No? Being a housewife in a healthy culture is completely normal and hardwired biologically.

A regressive culture is one that takes "protection" of women too far into possession and only uses them for their biological traits.

Since we haven't seen any burka pokegirls, I think we're safe from that.

We as a population drastically overestimate those natural differences, though. Not to mention the fact that the persistence of them usually has a social basis behind it. When most human societies shun physically bulky women as being "ugly" but expect men to exercise and be muscular, it's no wonder that the average man will be physically stronger. It has biology at its basis, but social factors that make it true. The same goes for the other way around with things like raising children. People usually assume fathers, especially single ones, are incompetent/shitty parents because it's historically viewed as a women's job. When, really, other than the natural inclination for infants to attach to mothers because they provide most early touch due to feeding, there's nothing that makes women better parents than men.

Gender roles are really shitty, pointless rules we made up that are holding society back as a whole.
