Did this thing use to be an Ultra Beast? Because I named the UBs the reverse of certain characters (Pheromosa is Enimasul[Lusamine]) and I sort of want to name mine Noidalg.

Looker confuses it with an Ultra Beast at the end of the Ultra Beast side-quest. But it's widely considered to be the 3rd main legendary at this point now. Same intro/music as Solgaleo and Lunala, and doesn't have the same ability as the other Ultra Beasts. Also there's some story thing about it refracting light or some shit since it's basically just one big prism, that would make it fit in line with Solgaleo and Lunala.

According to the Sun dex:

What I've heard is that Necrozma is like the box legendaries in that it came over in the past and lost its otherworldly energy (beast boost.) But I guess we'll have to wait until Stars/Eclipse for answers. I'll still gave my necrozma the dumb name.

they're pokémon from a different dimension. Solgaleo, Lunala and Necrozma are all UBs but the game treats them as though they're pokémon - the UBs are just unidentified extradimensional pokes being hunter by Looker and the Player

For example my Marowak is Knogga, which is the german name for Marowaks.

in-game - BST of 570, Beast Boost ability, highly specialised stats.

in universe - universe of origin, almost certain genetic traits, possible functional differences

the Cosmog line's an odd one, given that it displays several traits that we don't see in other ultra-beasts - such as the non 570-BST, the non Beast-Boost ability, the ability to evolve (not currently observed in any other ultrabeast)

overall, it's possible that the cosmog line is something seperate from the ultra-beasts, given that the only traits they share are the sound at the end of the cry, and the stated origin.

either way, we'll see.
