I tried for like 20 minutes the first time and I got nothing, I was in the area a day or so after and decided to try catching one for shits and giggles. Got one on the first try.

Dude, just save in front of the fishing spot, and the moment a non-Dhelmise appears during battle hit L + R + Start to soft-reset the game.

SM's startup load is so fast that it's much quicker to reset the entire game from the save point than having the enemy appear, your pokemon sent out, then use Run, then exit and then re-enter the area.
