I've actually already put thought into a region based in Michigan. Michigan's climate and geography is diverse enough that it would be perfect for a pokemon region.

You would start in a town in the southwest of the state, then work you way through the basic route 1 to grand rapids area, where you find the first big city and have your first encounter with evil team. You then travel east across the state to Lansing area, possibly passing through another town in between. From Lansing you would make your way to the biggest city, Detroit, which is also where evil team HQ is located. You have your first encounter there with them. You learn of evil team's big plans to take over the world etc etc and learn there is something in the thumb of Michigan that they want. So you head up to the thumb, but you're too late. Evil team grabbed what they wanted moved across the lake between the thumb and the rest of the Lower Peninsula. You surf through that route and end up in a town, yadda yadda head to the northern part of the LP. You reach Mackinac City, and from there you have either head over to Mackinac islands or sleeping Bear dunes.

Now, the two cover legends are based on a bear and a turtle. Whether you head to the dunes or the island first is version dependent. For my description I will follow turtle version.

Evil team has headed to sleeping Bear dunes, the region's "desert" area. First you get to Traverse city and then head into the dunes which are adjacent to it. Then you embark into the dunes until you reach the center, where you find evil team has caught bear. You fight evil leader who when defeated flees with bear across Mackinac bridge. The only way to save the world is to go to Mackinac island and catch turtle. So you backtrack to Mackinac City and surf to the island, which when you reach the center you find turtle's shrine and catch it. Then you head back to mackinac city and cross mackinac bridge to the upper peninsula. (Continued)

The world once again saved from evil, you head north to the top of the upper peninsula. In the middle is the eighth gym's town, and at the very top is the elite 4. Post game, areas of the UP and then an island off of Detroit's coast open up with many pokemon for the national Dex and some post game battle facility.

Well, Pennsylvania and Ohio might be more "Used to matter." The population there isn't really growing, it's more inertia from earlier times.

However, you're very wrong about NC and Georgia. The South is a massive growing economy currently, and NC and Georgia are the two growing the most. It also helps that a good amount of scientific and medical research is being conducted there, and until last year a lot of your movies were being filmed there too (but as I said, virtue signaling from Hollywood ended that). Each state is growing by at least 100,000 people per year, so if that keeps up then they'll likely overtake Ohio and Pennsylvania in a decade or two.

Either way, a state with over 10 million people is never going to be irrelevant, hollywood presence or not.

Orre feels more like a nuclear wasteland than a proper desert region, especially considering how there's no life to be found save for a small forest and caves connected to the region. Deserts can be barren but most hold quite a considerable ammount of flora and fauna, it's not all just death and sand in your asscrack.
