Tripokalon was an on-going goal with recurrent characters and Serena had to win something. The structure of the episodes was more similar to gym,contests,battle club rather than today's ep that felt like a filler. That's not saying much. It's basically a shitty, lazily written nonfiller then. Lana saying something about her goal and Pokemon for a few minutes was literally all that made this nonfiller. The rest of the episode had nothing else going on.

By contrast the only Serena episode that felt this boring was XY50, and at least that one gave us a rival, sort of.

Dawn had little character development other than being depressed a few times that literally didn't change her personality at all other than being a little more humble from time to time but even then was hard to notice. Her experiences didn't shape her and develop her as person. She was literally the same the first episode as the last.

This was not the case for Serena which had a completely other development beginning with her being unsure and insecure about what she would do developing to actually giving a shot which backfired heavily which made her decide that in fact shaped her as a person and you can see from now on that she's more secure and determined making which would grow and grow which in the end gave us a completely new, secure and determined Serena shaped by her experiences.

Similar differences was between DP Ash's development and XY Ash's development but not even close to the same scale.

Let's just put it this way: Maybe SM's exciting stuff isn't front loaded the way XY's was. If true, I think SM would be making a mistake by not having a bit more exciting stuff at the beginning. But can you imagine what this place would be like if the filler/COTD hell from XY08-XY19 was how XY began, and then the stuff from XY01-07 followed?

Who knows, maybe SM12-18 will give us some really exciting shit, and we don't even know it yet. Just be patient, and if the series truly is just going to be Da! filler hell, it will take longer than 5 episodes for that to be clear.
