I always assumed it was just a credit rating sorta thing that the Pokemon league was based on andwas basically prize money for winning making Pokemon battles essentially a paid profession.I figured at worst they transferred money from an account for winning or losing

It's a form of gambling like dog fighting and stuff. Gotta pay up if you lose. In your characters case, he/she gets beaten within an inch of their life and sent to a hospital instead.
