It's been a while since I posted in one of these. Mainly because I haven't written a whole lot, and I actually wanted to show something off. But y'know, Sun and Moon. Great games. Love 'em. Been playing them a lot. But I'll try and take a break and write some in my story tonight. Pic here just to get the idea without me retyping it in case anyone new wants to know.

I did have a few ideas that I wanted to throw around, though, for future chapters. One kinda minor idea I had is that Zinnia constantly asks about Snacks whenever she and Steven are getting supplies for their trips. But she specifically asks for Snacks. This leads Steven to think sh has a very unhealthy diet. Turn out she just knows how to rough it pretty well and find food off of the land. In Johto, she finds a bunch of Slowpoke and cuts off their tails. However, she gathers Shelder from the nearby pond for them to eat, making sure they don't starve either. She knows their tails grow back, and supplies them with food while they regrow.

Another, less funny, more of a plot point, idea is when they encounter Mr. Verich, AKA Greevil. Zinnia recognizes the famous old man, but not the same way most people would. She attacks him, (And I don't mean pokemon battles with him, I mean physically assaults him) knowing who he is. At some point, she has to leave with an unconscious Steven Stone, and she's branded as a villain by many news companies for attacking the sweet old man, Mr. Verich, and kidnapping Steven Stone. This is what leads her to go and meet up with Team Aqua and Magma to deal with their shared past.

Also, somewhat more minor idea. The HoopaMan (Really need to come up with a better name for him) drops a Dhelmise on Archie at one point. Archie really really likes the anchor pokemon and decides to keep it. I've had this idea in my head for a while, and even though it's not a water type, I still feel like Archie would love it.

TOTT: They're important in the sense that they provide a useful service to dedicated trainers, but in the world at large, they might not play a very big role. I imagine that they'd be respected, since they're (supposedly) very strong trainers and experts on their specific types, but only dedicated trainers would really benefit from them. They wouldn't mean very much to people who don't have Pokemon, people who have Pokemon but don't use them for battle, or people who use Pokemon for battle but aren't serious about getting competitive.

Let's do this:

It's set in the original non-mega universe as it's being asploded. The Gladion of this universe is the main character. When Mohn opened the wormhole, both he and Lusamine were killed, and Lillie fused with Nebby (similar to Nihilego) and acts as the "Conduit" keeping the portal open.

Gladion teams up with this universe's Zinnia to kill his sister and save reality. He's even edgier than before because dead patents and sister-murder goal. He "smokes drugs" and cuts to take away the pain. There's a scene where he has angry sex with Zinnia.

Eventually they fail and Gladion decides to spare Lillie, and they watch the world be torn asunder End of Evangelion style. A few people get warped into the other timeline like Looker and Anabel.

The overall tone of the quest is """dark""" as Gladion and Zinnia travel to gather trainers to fight Lillie in an apocalyptic setting, with gym leaders turning evil or going crazy, and featuring prominent subplots dealing with suicide, rape, abortion fetishization, genocide ("gas the Kalosians!"), and an evil Archeustian religious sect whose leader gets killed by Gladion wielding a katana.

Arceus gets used as an exclamation by specific individuals and is more likely to be said in specific regions.

Supplanting animals for Pokemon on standard turns of phrase is something I do infrequently. I try to come up with new expressions instead.

'generic' names for animals are still in use in the pokemon world wrt pokemon, mostly as the types/classes, so they're still permissable. Ninetales is a Fox Pokemon according to the pokedex so I've called them foxes in BSTF. For Latias, unfortunately, 'Eon' is less descriptive and I usually used 'dragon' from her typing in its place, though moments I referred to her without (species) name or pronoun were rare.

But both 'dragon' and 'fox' are concepts that normally wouldn't apply, along with 'cat' or 'dog' or 'bird' or any number of pokemon that are so defined by the Pokedex so we know the terms exist. As long as we have those terms, I think all the old idioms don't need to be changed.

Taxonomy and Etimology are weird, in particular from a doylesian perspective. it *is* called the Millennium Falcon after all, even if there's no apparent record of the concept of a falcon (let alone of a millennium).

I personally don't see a problem with using generic animal names in the Pokémon world, but referring to specific Pokémon species and substituting them in idioms gets a bit weird sometimes not because it's not fitting (it isn't), but because crosses all the way the other way around and becomes too specific. Like, why a Meowth? Why not a Purrloin?

Pokémon has had an issue with not being able to match sprites/models with attack animations since the very beginning. Eye ice beams and fart flamethrowers are just very simple easy examples. Ironically enough, GF couldn't get it "right" by giving Skuntank the adequately themed fart flamethrower in the games, even in Platinum where the sprite was pretty much made for it.

here is my (very brief) list of recommended PMD fics - http://pastebin.com/bwMQk36e

if you have read all these I would (conditionally) recommend Broken Ideals, it's a human-turned-Cubone in a craptastic world PMD fic with a lot of interesting twists. I like the quality of the writing/action and it takes an interesting approach to comparing feral/city Pokemon life and attitudes you don't see in other PMD fics.

The reason I say "conditionally" is because it's extremely long (850k words) and the author seems to take ages to make the plot develop towards any major events. If you can tolerate the story feeling aimless at times it can still be very fun to read, it at least presents a very colorful perspective of the setting you don't see in many stories.

Looking over the fics on FFN, far too many of them are just utter shit, and even the ones with decent premises usually wind up with some stupidity in them down the line.

What I'd most love to see is one set in pretty much any (actual) region, in a semi-realistic setting and time of general peace, following a normal trainer not destined for greatness, or any other cliched garbo, as (s)he makes an effort at making a training career something to live on.

In such a setting, I'd figure that Silph (or Devon, with Silph licensing) would subsidize starting supplies, and hell, maybe even the Leagues/governments would help keep prices affordable for trainers.

I know it would be a challenge to write something like this, but it would be a huge breath of fresh air.

As an opportunity to have some fun, I've been reluctant to set much in stone. Although badge dispenser is certainly a reliable default purpose, I've tried to establish more of a disciplinary and role model position for at least some of my gym leaders. BW canon let Gym Leader conflate with a somewhat Mayoral civic leader role, but it was wisely played as skilled trainers joining the fight against Plasma than it being their job, e.g. "Militia Leader."

I've found some relief from bleeding eyes by setting the color of the page to a sort of light brown or tan color and keeping the text black. It might not be the best color combination there is, but I think it's less harsh to look at than the default white. After all, brown's pretty much a shade of orange, and orange is the opposite of blue, which is the color that causes the most eye strain from what I've heard.

Plus it makes it look like I'm typing on some sort of old parchment, which is interesting.

I would presume that it's due to the same animating principle that keeps poison dart frogs off the menu for all but a handful of predators. "Yes, I'm cute and helpless compared to you, but I'll be the last thing you try to eat".

Even if the local Slurpuff aren't sitting on thrones of Dragon-Type corpses, the local Dragon-Types are going going to divert their attention from the little puffballs that aren't really fazed by their toughest attacks and spray irritating pixie dust in their face.

The better part of valor is discretion, I would also imagine that the better part of being a feared, scaly menace is similarly discretion and knowing what fights are too much of a hassle to pick.

How advanced were past civilizations of Pokeworld in your view?

I mean, three thousand years ago in our world, we were still getting the hang of iron and all that jazz.

But based on XY, it seems like they had full medieval style civilizations up and running.

On this note specifically; the movies love showing us all sorts of advanced technology, and not all of them are from the modern era. Some may be magic, yes, but a lot are shown operating through technological means.

If we want to get serious, you have to remember that humans and Pokemon have coexisted in this world nearly since the beginning, so all anthropology and archaeology would be intertwined with Pokemon.

Magic definitely exists in the Pokemon world, both in the games and in the anime. We can assume that magic "fell off" at some point because in the modern setting where the games take place it is nearly nonexistent. AZ and the ultimate weapon seem to imply there was some kind of Zeal-esque magitech society in Poke-Europe ~3000 years ago. Perhaps the overuse of magic and the development of magical WMDs led to its downfall and ushered in an era more centric around technological discovery.

Since people relied on Pokemon to do many tasks that we require technology for, I think that technology would actually advance at a slower rate. In ancient/medieval times people must have had higher qualities of life due to magic and the natural abilities of Pokemon. In order to maintain this high QoL, the Pokemon world may very well have powered through several ages including the industrial revolution once serious scientific thinkers started to emerge.

But these are just my two cents on the subject. I really wish Gamefreak would make a serious "historical" Pokemon game in a medieval fantasy setting since they've teased it so much with BW and XY. All we can really do is speculate since they'll probably never touch on it outside of the anime canon.

Sounds a bit like how magic fell out of use in the Elder Scrolls series, after the Oblivion crisis the mages guild disbanded and summoning magic became much more taboo. By the time of Skyrim lots of spells have been lost to the ages (levitation for example).

They likely had the potential to be very advanced, but bounced all back and forth the technological progress scale due to how easy it is to mess it up big, so it's probable civilizations reached peaks and then fell to the bottom, or even were wiped out entirely. Both human civilizations and whatever Pokémon civilizations they had.

We have some practical hints at least.

* The Flower Weapon 3000 years in the past is never stated to be a fully technological thing nor a fully magical thing. Were it technological it would have been easy to replicate, and were it magical there would have been very hard to rid of it (to be fair, Lyssandre doesn't look like he has to actually do much if any effort to find it, fix it and power it up).

* Pokéballs as portable devices exist since at least 60 yr ago (Celebi Movie). The mechanism exists since in the very least ancient times (the Pokéballs that trap Giant Pokémon in the early anime) and the concept to use them to capture or seal a Pokémon exists since at least 800 yr ago (Aaron, Movie 8).

* There are various pieces of magiteck lying around that are not fully nor really any well understood even in the present time - idea reinforced by the fact most of them are activated by accident. The Baltoy time machines, the Alto mare defense mechanism having a socket for a Soul Dew, are probably the most prominent examples. Other are easily activable and even well documented for the purpose but you still have to chance upon the very specific power up requisites, such as the rainbow staircase in the Mega Evolution Special or the Pokémon mind control scepter...

Basically, we have suggestions that civilizations have been on the all around. There's nothing sayng a former civilization has not reached outer space, probably a Pokémon one if certain episodes are to be believed. (Deoxys has to have come from *somewhere*)

Thanks. The movie wound up inspiring me in that the Volcanion it portrayed had a very negative view on humanity, so I wanted to make it something dangerous.

Then again I did "benevolent volcano god" for Heatran so a destructive volcano legend gave me a chance to cover new ground anyway.

Can't you express what you need to without using the human speech cheat? I don't think it's inherently bad, but I don't see why it's necessary. You already rely on psychics a fair bit.

Any edits to be made in chapter 9? It's been up for two days now and I haven't gotten even a peep about a single error. That can either be a really good or really bad thing.

It could, but it wouldn't be better off for it. Identified as The Force, it allows the narrative to establish unique parameters for it; limitations, trade-offs, and modes of use.

It could, but it wouldn't be better off for it. Despite the many flaws in Episode One, and the fun we had with that particular mechanic being chided per "The Force/Jedi is a disease now?" it served to make The Force something that non-Force/normal (by Star Wars standards) people could identify, measure, be certain about; it remained a super power but it wasn't wholly an arbitrary mystery of the universe anymore and it defined the matter of accessibility: The sorcerer's apprentice couldn't just put on the hat and pick up the wand and wield power.

Pokémon is conflicted because it wants pokemon to be brutal battle beasts, but it also wants you to brush their fur, feed them cupcakes, and become Best Friends with them in a way more attractive than Man's Best Friend. That last bit is the clincher: A pokemon must be smarter than a dog and we've selectively bred dogs to be human-language compatible in a number of ways.

So, to return to the question, "Would [pokefic du jour] be better with mute pokemon?" That depends on whether or not the plot benefits from a language barrier.

I answered yes and no to that question by implementing the Speech T.M. plot device, and making that some Ocimene pokemon can speak fluently (and as a consequence have gained the capacity to think in terms similar to those that humans do) part of my region's cultural crisis. There are direct benefits (no need for "Lassie's trying to tell us something!" scenes, species-name chatter) but vital is that the some-talk-some-don't canon is a cheat that defends the premise.

It depends on the story.
C/E: Vincent's arc is about how his team was like his family, but increased emphasis on League distorted their relationships. That Phil is a mute and refused to gain speech is symbolic, that he joined the roster after it became more a team than a family.
A/P: has a mixture, IIRC, the eevee is mute, the lucario is aura-telepath, the vulpix is STM+; so the character's personalities reflect this, with vulpix being chatty and engaging, eevee being somewhat nonchalant, but lucario closed off and focused on his charge.
Waterlogged: Pre-STM, all pokemon are mute.
D/P: Mutes, with exploration of simplified symbolic language as a middle-ground.
E/V: Anthony makes a point of wanting to own only mute pokemon. At first it allows a dramatic irony that his houndooms are quite chatty among themselves (Seth in particular is rendered in an over-elaborate way to emphasize this contrast and to define his personality early.); later when Warden receives the Speech T.M. it both shows Anthony's attitude changing specifically toward Warden as not-just-a-pokemon to him, and allows an insight into Warden's motivations—that he often as a simple but rational goal in mind despite his reckless combat style or other bold misbehaviors.
LL: While spitballing it with the executive producer, speech was in the air but it wasn't ruled out (one character would have learning to speak as early development) so I simply let Speech TM serve its role and adapted LL to suit an Ocimene framing.
NGON: Mixed. Ford's ability to enjoy a human's comforts through a career that most humans wouldn't want (and being able to excel in his role thanks to flight) lets him portray the duality of a talking pokemon being caught between civilization and nature; this is shown throughout with his desire to go feral when he's depressed, Claude appealing to him as though he were human but to protect him like a trained pokemon would,

…his reaching out to a wild, mute pokemon for a kind of companionship that he doesn't really know from experience but does from his distant past and nature, and sometimes symbolically, with his use of his mail bag as a defensive weapon and the boundaries of his territory, with his fighting with a professional/competitive attitude outside of the office, but going full-tilt Outrage-berserk when the threat enters the dragon's lair.

In most cases, similar stories could be told without Speech, but either they would demand alternative conceits to lubricate communication (e.g., Mewtwo's telepathy, Lucario's aura telepathy, Rotom's dex-voice-synth manipulation…) or they would become mostly-humans stories and there are plenty of those already. I don't think it's worth the trouble when Speech TM offers such extra opportunity for variety, as I briefly list above.

Psychics have their own broad usefulness that helps me agree to feature them frequently, but I also wanted to establish that Psychic-types were already popular enough to have an advantage in the domestic pokemon population because their mental capacity made them easier to get along with in a home environment in a companionship role rather than a pet role. Speech TM brought more diversity to domestic pokemon ownership, and drama to the society, among the consequences of its introduction.

Anyway, my next story is on both sides of this fence. It begins with a canon-region-hatched braixen who can't seem to get into his third form—thus not-psychic and mute—but has set for himself as a goal to become skilled in Psychic-type and communicative abilities. Be careful what you wish for, doggo.
