About gyms/trials:
Naples for fire
Taranto for poison
Aosta for ice
Venice for water
Milan for electric
Matera for rock
Turin for ghost
Florence for fairy
No idea about Sicily but it should be there too

Naples is not necessarily fire, but Taranto is the most polluted city in Italy BY FAR.

Very heavy religious bureaucracy in some sections of the country. Can really lean on Arceus and some older lore here and possibly take the time to connect the dots between the various legendary creatures.

Reminents of an ancient empire of which the current country has never obtained a fraction of the former glory.

Very mountainous regions and seasonal changes that alter routes and access to certain areas because of topography.

Heavy ethnocentrism from residents and people on other side of country. Can foil that with MC in either having MC be an outsider and receive moderate hostility and untrustworthiness or MC is a local and sees their treatment of foreigners.

Pompeii reference. Either abandoned village with lots of spoopiness or buried village set up as an archeological site (possible fossilmon link if ladder).

Economic depression from failed institutional regulation.

Plenty of waifu material delicious brown trainers.

It's becoming a trend. Regions are based on where either there's a significant Japanese population or some country that's popular with the Japanese.

Two in the USA: New York (tourist destination) and Hawaii (tourist destination and tons of Japanese immigrants). France due to Rose of the Versailles.

I bet you, the next game will be based in Brazil, California, or the Philippines.

Italy would be a fun region, and greece should be the postgame area. I could see some really cool legendary Pokémon, and some based off of roman lore. Vesuvius should be a place where you find the legendary, and they're both based off of a heaven hell concept. I suppose that the Vatican should be the league, and victory road is all of Rome. I don't know what the starters would look like, however
