They're their own canon. Which is nice because the main characters get their own personalities instead of being blank slates. It's also part of why I like BW better than the game plot. I hated N's idealistic talk and the game forces you to go along with it and doubt yourself when you as the player have 0 doubts about what you're doing.
In BW, black calls him out on his BS instead of just submitting to him.
