Outside of any rumors, a third version on Switch just seems like too perfect of a fit to not exist. It would literally print money, and S/M feel like there's just enough of a small hole to fill that there must be a third game coming.

The next game being on Switch rumors only started because of the Stars leaks and I'm sure that they were not expecting their plans to be found before the game's announcement.

Even if Stars isn't real, there will be something of the sort very soon.

The 3DS is at the end of its lifespan, broken open by piracy.

The logical move is to release a sequel/upscaled version 3 on the switch, and do it soon to... well, sell the Switch. No piracy to hinder its sales, less hacking etc.
