They're people who would have preferred another Silver and didn't get that Hau being happy and enjoying his island challenge but still maturing over the course of the game was the point. He's coming to the same balance of personality that his grampa does and it's really satisfying to watch him grow. Gladion has a similar arc, just kinda.. inverse. I really liked his moment at the base of Mt Lanakila. Lilie I would have preferred if she actually fought alongside me using Solgaleo against Lusamine, but she did just fine in her own way and maybe that's the idea. I dunno. I'm at the elite 4 in Sun now and it's had more likable characters than most of the games I've played in the last year. Also, if you want a laugh, make a Slowpoke use Breakneck Blitz. The animation is (maybe unintentionally) hilarious

The problem with Hau is that his best points are always because of the contrast to other characters. When you compare him to the main character who is pretty much a mute, you just have an overbearing happy-go-lucky character with little else. He's great when Gladion is around because it makes his cheery attitude amusing.

Honestly the writing in this game is pretty great.

And I get why people would dislike Hau but he's so harmless, plus he has his moments, especially when he's playing off of Gladion's seriousness, also that moment when he just told Faba how silly his plan was was great.

I fucking love the pokedex entries in this game. They actually bothered to write new ones for old pokemon (or at least re-word them) instead of copypasting the same ones from the last several gens, and include interactions specific to Alola or with newer pokemon. Plus the writing is top-notch on them anyways.
