That's how you be dramatic without putting any effort into making anything new. All the characters are there, they literally just move the camera. No extra effort past that. The player character does show emotion though, during the FMVs.

The most expression the Player has ever shown in X/Y was opening their mouths right before you fight Xerneas/Yveltal.

In Sun/Moon the Player opens their mouths when Nihilego first appears. So at least showing an expressionless, smiling face is better than no face at all?

Hilbert was way more expressive than the MC of SM. Even as a sprite you briefly had times where you could see him struggle trying to balance and opening his mouth or getting noticeably startled whenever something interesting happened.
