Overall i have to agree that Gen IV has the best set of starters (if we're only talking final forms), even if i didn't enjoy pearl much.

Fire: Not sure if Infernape or Charizard because nostalgia. Leaning Infernape.

Part of why I like it is how it finally brought water starters into the limelight. That, and protean is surprisingly fitting for a water type Pokemon. All in all it's very well put together as a pokemon.

Decidueye is probably going to drop when I update this, it's not as good as I expected.

Gen 1 is roughly equal to Gen 3, although I think Gen 3 got better mega evolutions.

Blastoise got pretty messed up in the transition to modern 3D though...

Gen 1, 2, and gen 6 are the only gens where I like all three starters, but I really think gen 6 takes the cake.

Gen 4's starters are also really great, but I personally really dislike Infernape.

It's a really close call between Generation I, III and IV. In the end, I chose Generation I because the starters have some sort on-going theme that makes them feel more real.

All the gens have at least one starter I don't like so I can't say any individual gen. Gen 1 I disliked Charmander's head, 2 Croconaw was rather meh, 3 had Treecko (although Sceptile is nice), 4 I only really liked Torterra because Empoleon has a tiny ass head and I hate monkeys, 5 only had one good one, ditto for 6 and 7.

Overall if I could just single them out, I'd take Serperior, Typhlosion, and either Swampert or Greninja.

I can't speak for everyone but for me personally they were a huge letdown coming out of the 4th Gen.

The 4th Gen had great starters through and through and also was the first gen that had them all dual typed.

Gen 5 comes along and its back to two mono types and the third fire/fighting so it was letdown.

My favorite set of starters is gen7. A lot of variety in terms of design, i love all of them. Too bad they suck in game but wathever, at least we don't have GF forcing one of them down everyone's throat and leaving the other two to die like gen6.

Gamefreak had finished most of the Gen VI dex, but had no idea which Pokemon would be the stand out in the eyes of the people. So they gave most of the Gen VI designs to the Smash developers and told them to add whoever they liked the best, and most of them loved Greninja the most. Ask most people which gen I an VI starter they chose (if they did), and i guarantee you the great majority will respond Greninja and Charizard. As a matter of fact, according to X/Y play statistics, Greninja/Charizard was BY FAR the most popular in-game starter combo.

Why would they make an Ash-Chesnaught when it is the least popular starter of all time? Would the merch sell like hot cakes? No. Would it attract new viewers to the anime? Probably not. Would it make any kind of impact on the franchise? No, because its fanbase is too small and niche even for non-starter standards.

They make things for Greninja and Zard because they actually sell, they do what's expected to do, generate profit. Greninja's 3DS theme outsold freaking Red & Blue's theme by far.

That's what surprised me about the list. These polls are for distros, so many pokefags exploit this only to get Rare/Legendary pokemon. So even if they're tagged as "CHOOSE YOUR FAVORITE POKEMON!", totem popular like Lucario, Charizard and the like had never won it. The fact that Pikachu, Sylveon and Charizard made it to the list, along with Greninja actually being the first non-rare pokemon to ever win the poll goes to show that most people genuinely love them.
