Also it's stuff like this that makes me wish that the day I'm a parent, I can share experiences like this with my kids. My folks were never interested in vidya and I had no friends to play them with. My folks aren't bad folks, but unfortunately we just do not share interests; which made bonding with them hard at times.

Tbh, this is sorta why I find Nintendo games like Pokemon, Kirby or Zelda to be among my favorite vidya. It's just so comfy and imaginative that it's a good escape from some of the troubles we have IRL. Pokemon especially since it's become such a well-known series that encourages interaction with others. I would have killed to have had my parents or friends to play Pokemon with me as a kid.

Yeah lmao, it took her forever though. She wanted a steel type because she had four faeries but didn't want to go back and train a magnemite and didn't want skarmory because she thinks it looks dumb. So I told her Beldum was on the mountain and she spent almost a day trying to catch one. We started traveling in June for a combination of business and family shit (fucking 7 weddings in one summer and we had to travel over 500 miles for all of them). US schools are out between mid June and late September. She was back for the first two weeks of school, out for like two in October and a few days in November but is otherwise going to school fine.

She's Eight. She's only in second grade. I don't think missing a few weeks of school and getting to travel is a bad tradeoff at her age. That aside, just teaching her how pokemon works is a superior math curriculum to 90% of what they teach in school at this grade level, they don't even teach multiplication until third grade here.

Moon is one of her presents, I let her have it early though because I'd be a terrible parent to play it in front of her while she waited another month. Her mother and I both agreed a long time ago though, that we're not going to be those parents who lavish the kids with all kinds of crazy thousand dollar toys and gizmos. One present from each of us, one 'big' thing from Santa and of course the grandparents spoil her with whatever. Have to agree~ Through travel, she's getting to experience life outside of anything written in a book. Why read about the history of a state when you can physically experience it by checking out museums or visit the culture?

And Pokemon does provide great math opportunities. Teaches multiplication, the ability to estimate a situation (will your Pokemon be able to survive a move that does x2 damage w/o STAB or x2 with STAB?), how chance and probability works, etc.
