Mareanie can also be obtained as soon as you get access to Lapras, altough once again it's fucking rare

It's not really a matter of lacking new pokémon it's more that the new pokémon are, in many cases super duper rare

This is the biggest problem with Pokemon.

Most pokemon are completely unviable, utter trash. If you want a good team, you're limited to a very narrow selection, despite the huge roster.

Sounds more like you couldn't enjoy the ride without having an overpowered team comprised of your favourite typings.
I will admit I wasn't too excited about seeing all these Kanto fuckers for the hundreths time but the variety from all gens combined was pretty great overall.

As somebody who just took in whatever I could find, I had no problems making a tream entirely made of new pokemon from the very beginning, switching them out multible times for other new pokemon, till I had my non legendary dream team of NEW pokemon by the volcano on the second island.

Though I will say, whoever pitched the idea for Charjabug's evolve condition deserves to be shot.
