Soothe bell, the one pelaglio island, massages, correctly flavored Malasadas, running around, using items. The usual stuff. Its just slow.

Also if you use the Palaglio Island for happiness/egg hatching be warned as leaving them in for over 24 hours makes them dizzy and not like you as much.

How do you get to the water section of Vast Poni Canyon? I saw it in the background on my way through, but I've reached the altar and still haven't been to any surf-able parts.

I can't find a list of wild pokemon in order of gameplay. So far it's butterfree, wimpod, grubbin, cutiefly, and dewpider.

I don't know if I should just settle on parasect, or wait for later, but I don't want to wait until really late endgame for the final member

It's happiness evolution right? I got my Pichu to evolve at level 16 by healing it every time it got damaged and getting it to hold the soothe bell which you can get before the first trail I believe, or shortly after it. Try hard not to let it get knocked out since that reduces friendliness.

I think it's a flat double. So if you're going after Fletchinders without any EV bonuses, every Fletchinder will give 4 EVs and thus you'll need 63 kills.

I'm guessing that's the case because Serebii mentions that it'll take 7 SOS kills to max out a stat if you have both Pokerus and a Power item. That'll net 36 EVs per kill. And 252/36 = 7.

If you save up your points from a previous day you can do an island scan, then scan 10 qr codes and then do another island scan. I don't think there's really any getting around waiting for each individual scan to regenerate though.

After beating your first trial, wild mons will start calling for help (unless paralyzed, burned, etc.). Once you've done this 40 times in one battle, you start getting 3/4++ max IV mons every mon. It's extremely easy to get high EV dittos.

you're now immune to explosion and resist ancient power. I led with Pikachu ~lv.35 (no light ball) and was dealing 55-75% with volt switch, going into poliwrath to take a self-destruct or AP while the core got exposed. If it wasn't the color I wanted I would just bubblebeam (poliwags in malie garden will have it) and take it out. Otherwise, if it had enough HP, I could body slam which is resisted and might paralyze. The catch rate is pretty high though so you really don't even need to do that.
you can lead with poliwrath if you want and I'm sure do 50%+ with bubblebeam, but I would have it carry a smoke ball so you can for sure run from skarmory and shit

How do I get this stupid rat to evolve?
Last pokemon game I played was Sapphire, so I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing to make it like me. I've been keeping it in battles, feeding it beans, grooming it after battles, not letting it faint, what else do I need to do to make this brat grow up?
It's level 16, seems like it should be pikachu by now.

Make sure you get the Soothe Bell on Route 3, makes your life easier.

Don't do that if you want it to evolve. Happiness and Affection are two separate mechanics. You just have to run around like a tard and win battles and spam minerals on it. What you can do every now and then as a happiness check if you haven't found that NPC yet is to save, use a rare candy, if it doesn't evolve, reload your game and wait a bit longer. Took mine til about 24 to evolve, which is about the 2nd trial on Akala island.

Speaking of balls, how do they pass down when breeding this gen? any changes?

A)Abra's are easier to get started with when you're just starting to assemble your tools. Catching an eevee with an apricon ball is annoying since they're rare and you only get the one ball so you have to reset and hunt for eevee again everytime it fails.
