The preview shows something different, it looks like Mimikyu could an actual threat to Pikachu. Electro Ball can be countered by Shadow Ball, Iron Tail is useless and so is Quick Attack, only Thunderbolt is effective so far.

No it didn't. The first battle that was Bunnelby vs. Pikachu was already well written and animated well. You had Ash jumping off of the Prism tower and wrestling a fucking Garchomp. Ash was battling TR and Inkay with Pikachu being blinded.
