Guzma probably didn't do well for the same reason gollisopod doesn't always do well. His go to gimmick, while viable, has a good chance of failing. Gollisopod lowers hp, gets sent back, send out ariados and try to revenge kill with buffed fell stinger. It's there, but I feel it failed enough times that people thought the strategy sucked.

It has crap special attack, you're not supposed to run Scald on it. You're supposed to run Liquidation + 3 other moves of your choice. Leech Life, Poison Jab, and maybe Infestation to trap + breaking Sturdy.
