There is a real narrative reason Lillie gave you Nebby but most people won't know it if you don't take Solgaleo/Lunala to the League. If you take Solgaleo/Lunala to the League, there is a special introduction in the battle against Tapu Koko which implies that Tapu Koko's main reason for helping you and Nebby originally was so that you would become strong enough to give him the fight of his life.
