I played through the entire game without using the exp share and at multiple points I wanted to bash my head through a wall. It was a really bad idea.

Anyone else do the same thing and have some experiences to share?

It sucks that my Pokémon are the same level as wild Pokémon but I think without exp share makes the major battles much more interesting

Before poni island my team was pretty well leveled
Getting to poni island I was literally 5-8 levels lower than just about every trainer there and beyond.

I enjoyed it though
