Why do people complain about the cutescenes?

Because instead of trying to catch em' all or explore and talk to NPCs, they just run to the next checkmark like they've been trained to do in every AAA game made in the last ten years

Pokemon's an RPG but it's not a story focused one, so it gets annoying

I didn't have a problem with the cutscenes themselves
I had a problem with how the game forbids you from exploring and railroads you from cutscene to cutscene
It feels like a themepark MMO

There are several story-focused RPGs and several other non-story focused RPGs out there. I don't mind a bit more story, but I'd certainly love to walk more than a few steps without an irrelevant cutscene popping up.

Personally though I'm more bothered by the stupid railroading than anything else

You can still catch Pokemon, explore, and talk to NPCs. You even get rewarded for seeking out the Trial Captains after completing their trials with a real battle with them. There are plenty of places and areas you can go to on the side, plus the unlocking of Ride Pager mons is set up so that you can go back to earlier spots that were and uncover new areas with them.

It's entirely your own fault if you ran from cutscene to cutscene just because they added a marker for them.

I think he's agreeing with you. He's just saying the people that complain about the checkpoints are playing the game in the most boring way possible.

The people complaining about story and dialog in the games--in SM especially have only ever played Pokémon as their only RPG.

You're a fucking retard if you think all RPGs shove cutscenes in your face and railroad you to the extent SM does.
Earlier JRPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy allowed you to explore freely without being halted by plot every five minutes. Even if their plot was linear they still allowed you to explore areas beforehand. A lot of RPGs nowadays focus on being more open and allowing for exploration.

And what if people who complain aren't big into RPGs in general? Pokemon games started it out with a focus on adventure and had a reasonable amount of exploration. You weren't constantly stopped by characters. You were only stopped by your rival and the evil team. That was the case until Gen 5, and now it's at it's worse with SM.
The only sense of exploration you get out of SM is by going back to areas that weren't already covered by the insane amounts of cutscenes. And even then those are tiny little side areas so there's not much point in going to them.

As already said in this thread, the areas that weren't already covered are extremely small and usually have nothing interesting in them. There's not much to explore in them so what's the point?

They gave us an entirely new, potentially interesting region and they ruin it by restricting us, even more than in other games, from seeing it all on our own and by ourselves because they needed to shove cutscenes and characters down our throats.

I miss having solo adventures in Pokemon without the constant interruptions.
