One Kahuna is new to the job, and another told Kukui to go fuck himself and sent a little girl in his stead.
He's not exactly scraping the barrel for appropriate candidates, but his plan didn't go as expected.

Though yeah, it would have been nice to see her at least once before.

She was mentioned in the demo, but outside of that I don't think there was anything other than the resort.
Kinda like the thought process that they had to fly her in due to the hassle of creating a league. It gives the league as a whole a bit more personality. Two of the members basically having to be shoehorned in due to complications.
Could've done with more mentions and backstory, but it adds nicely to the fact that she seems like the most competitive of the league in aiming for your title. It feels more professional battling a near complete stranger compared to if you'd met or heard about her a lot before. It'd seem petty if we knew a lot about her and she acted this way imo.
Could definitely see why people could want more characterization and foreshadowing beforehand though.

Considering Sophocles has different dialogue depending on whether you've booted up Festival Plaza before or not, wouldn't be surprised if there was some way to meet her earlier

It really makes the games feel unfinished when they just throw 2 new characters at us in the last hour of the game, Mina and Khalil very much feel forced in, and I'm not really sure what the point of either is. It's not a twist or surprise when a character you've never met or know nothing about is one of the final bosses. And Mina is even worse, cause she's not even a boss. Why give her the unique title of Trial Captain one of the defining features of this generation and let it have no significance on this character.

Fourth island as a whole is somewhat of a copout in that they could've changed anything they liked, but it added a whole lot compared to the source material. It's based on the smallest major county and the running saying is that it only has one road and traffic light. Plus, it's the smallest, oldest, and slowest island not counting the individual smaller ones that make up Maui county. I can like it for that design, but I could see why it would be unfavorable from another perspective.

It honestly kind of pissed me off that the elite 4 was comprised of people that I had been talking with and even battling throughout the course of my adventure. I really didn't feel the need to face Olivia and the old guy again. Maybe I'm just a nostalgia fag though, idk.

It kind of sucks that they just went half with that. Ghost bitch isn't someone you fought but you still "know her", golfer is new, but then you have two kahunas you already fought beforehand. Should have either gone fully one way or the other.

I had the opposite problem, I wanted the Elite 4 to be 4 new characters, or at least characters we didn't fight.
Instead they rehashed 2 Kahunas for no reason.
It should have been Dragon/Fairy/Ghost/Flying

By your logic, every Pokémon game is unfinished. SM are the first games where the E4 members (sans Kahili) are actually fleshed out. Meanwhile, they are literally who's with less substance than a potatoe in the other games.
