Actually, it's "nihil" and "ego" meaning "no identity." Lillie reflects the Nihilego in the sense that she lacks her own identity for a large portion of the story, but when her look changes, she becomes her own identity.

Incorrect. Nihil means nothing. Ego means self. It implies that it doesn't have a self, which is true since it latches onto others and boosts their abilities and ego to the extreme. As for Rock that's because it's made of living glass and glass/crystal has always been associated with Rock. They still could have made it look more like glass or crystal though.
