Yeah I'd say midway. I just got him and haven't gone any further in the story; you do the first trial almost immediately, and make your way to the second trial(Mimikyu) right after that. From what I can tell, story is about to happen. But there's still a good portion of island unexplored for me

Also, I found alolan sandshrew in a patch of grass just north-west of the black beach (you'll know what I mean when you get to the Mimikyu trial). It seems to have a super low encounter rate, but it's probably your only shot at one of the alolan icemons until the actual ice area, which is just before the E4 to my knowledge

The easiest way to EV train is by chaining SOS Pokemon, since they give increased EV payouts compared to regular pokemon. As soon as you get adrenaline orbs and something that you can TM False Swipe onto, you can get started, but without the Power Items from the postgame, it still takes a while.

The beans accumulate during 24h, ending 24hours after the last shake. every 24h cycle gives a fixed amount of beans. If you don't collect a day's worth of beans they are overwritten by the next day's.

Mudsdale, Ribombee, Salazzle, Mimikyu, Lycanroc-Day, Toxapex, Alolan Muk, Alolan Exeggutor, and Alolan Raichu are all good Pokemon for use in-game.

Alolan Muk is good because it has great attacking stats, a good movepool, it can inflict poison with physical attacks, which is good because burn damage was nerfed making poison a lot stronger, it's immune to Psychic and its only weakness is Ground. Also you can find Grimer incredibly early on.

Save your beans by feeding Pokemon malasadas if you want to boost their affection
They work like Pokeblocks so Pokemon prefer a particular flavor according to their nature (ie. Speed boosting natured Pokemon prefer sweet)

I think it levels up based off of the total amount of FC you've collected
So just make sure to check the Plaza when there's the green ! on it since it means someone is there to give you FC
The little games like the type matchup tests are a fantastic way to make FC, it's better to do it online with groups
